Normally, we wouldn’t dedicate an entire blog post to a single item—but this find is just too special not to share.
At an estate sale last year, I came across a 1991 magazine published by the Tyler Economic Development Council, Inc. Filled with colorful stories and photographs of local businesses, organizations, and people, it’s a time capsule of Tyler during a prosperous era. Many of the places featured are now gone, making this publication all the more valuable to researchers and community members.
I was first drawn to it because it was published the same year I graduated from Robert E. Lee High School! But after flipping through its pages, I knew it belonged in the archives for others to enjoy in the future.
Memories of The Brass Lion
One feature that immediately caught my attention was The Brass Lion, owned by Marcia and Paul Grubb. For many years, their shop was the only place in Tyler to buy James Avery jewelry.
Back then, I didn’t own many pieces, but the ones I had came from their selection. I can still remember the charm bracelets that jingled like music, the teddy bear stud earrings I longed for, and the pendants that graced so many of my friends’ necks.
“Miss Marcia,” as I knew her, had been my ballet teacher nearly my entire life. I was even part of the second generation of her students, since my mother, Kay Kidd, had studied under her as well. Visiting her at The Brass Lion was always a treat—it felt like stepping into another world. After all, I was used to seeing her in tights, leotards, and ballet shoes, not in pants and a blouse!
Sadly, when the Grubbs passed and the beautiful brick building was demolished to make way for Chuy’s and other businesses at Broadway and Chimney Rock, it felt like losing a piece of Tyler’s history.
Looking Ahead
This magazine highlights so many other memories of Tyler businesses that shaped our community, including:
-
M.A. Simms & Co.
-
Almand’s
-
Broadway Jr.-Sr.
-
Cace’s Restaurant
I plan to share more stories about these in future posts—if memory serves me well!
In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you. What businesses or places from Tyler’s past hold a special place in your heart? Comment below and share your memories.
Until next time,
Thanks for reading,
Tiffany
