1903
Construction Started
Construction started after Tyler received a generous gift of $15,000 by Andrew Carnegie. In order to receive this gift, Andrew Carnegie required the people of Tyler to provide the land to build the library.
1904
Grand Opening
The library officially opened its doors to the public on October 3rd, offering a wide range of books and resources to the community. Miss Mary B. Sawyer, of Boxford, MA, serving as Librarian. Miss Sawyer’s contract read, “In consideration of the faithful discharge of her duties the Librarian shall receive a salary of $35.00 per month…”
1936
Expansion of Space
Construction began in 1935, and every effort was made by the local architect, Shirley Simons, to match the new addition to the original library building. On June 8, 1936, the formal opening of the new addition was held.
1980
Modernization Efforts
The Smith County Historical Society moved into the old Carnegie Library, when the new library was built across the stree.
